Bela has excelled as a National Specialty BOS and Select winner, VCD1 titleholder, and dam of multiple ABTC Select and Sweepstakes winners. Yet, as well as she has done in these venues, her accomplishments do not, and should not, define her life.

Bela has a truly special soul that draws people to her. Once you have experienced her inherent warmth and sheer beauty, you just can't seem to stay away. As one of her friends said, “Bela has an ethereal quality of goodness. She has this serene inner peace with happy energy.”

When Bela came to live with me at the age of seven, I immediately recognized people's affinity to Bela. Actually, it was hard not to notice. She now works as a therapy dog, allowing us to share her special qualities. This is work that Bela truly, truly loves. My only regret is that we didn't start her new career earlier in her life, allowing her to delight, and be delighted by, even more people. Once termed “Bela Bad,” she is anything but.

Brandy earned his CH, CD, and CGC when he was one year old in eleven straight shows. He also became a registered service dog (TDI) during that time period. His show career was interrupted by a family medical crisis, and he served as service dog for my husband, who had had a stroke, for the next three years. Brandy is currently enjoying agility, herding, and tracking. He has continued to be an all-around wonderful dog and my devoted companion.

As of May 1, Blast turned thirteen years old. Blast came to live with us in Montana when he was four years old as a re-home. When he arrived from Maine, the first thing Blast did was jump up in the recliner and he has been there ever since. Even though Blast came with his AKC Championship, his previous owner did not feel that Blast had what it took to do performance events. Blast has proven himself with his versatility to title in obedience, agility, and tracking. Just last November Blast earned his TD and his VCD1 title. The things that Blast loves the most are tennis balls, herding (which he would do all day long if he were allowed), and his recliner. Blast also enjoys visiting the nursing homes and the women's prison. The ladies always enjoy it when he crawls up in their laps. As breeder JoAnne LaFear said: “Blast showed that he had the ability to work. He just needed the desire to work for someone he loved.”

Twelve years ago, a black-faced ball of fluff came into our lives and nothing has been the same since!

Vayne has acquired some titles, but these are not his most important accomplishments. More important are the things he has taught me, such as the fact that dogs do indeed have a sense of humor!

Over the years, Vanye's duties around the house have included protecting his canine and feline charges from interloping puppies that might get too rowdy or curious. Although he has always been a very gentle soul and the smallest of our dogs, he is also the undisputed leader of our little pack.

There has been a time or two when Vanye felt the need to protect me and I was glad to have him near me. Now that he is older, it's my turn to protect him from the rambunctious youngsters.

Twelve years have passed now and his gait may be less steady, his vision not as sharp and his hearing is fading, but he will always be my bright-eyed baby boy.

“Z” is my first Tervuren, and was my introduction to the breed. At almost ten years old, he's retired from obedience and agility. His outstanding temperament, love of people, especially children, has led him to his true calling, therapy dog work. He has an almost uncanny ability to win over even those who may have a fear of dogs.

He has made me proud, winning an AKC ACE for his therapy work at our rehabilitation unit. With his bright eyes and wagging bushy tail, and dressed with a colorful bandana, he's well known at the facilities we visit; schools, nursing homes, rehab units, and the kid's booth at our shows.

I got him a “slightly used” kid a few years back, and he's managed to train Autumn quite well for the Junior Showmanship ring.

Thank you ABTC for the Honor Parade, “Z” is very happy to have an opportunity to get back into the ‘breed ring’ again and stand around eating and not having to work too terribly hard!

I guess you could say that Junior was a late bloomer. I remember Edeltraud Laurin saying in March 1990, “Will he grow?” I replied that I sprayed him with Rapid Grow every day.

Mid-year 1994, I looked at Junior and said, “You've grown in to a show dog and we are going to shows.” In 1995, Junior rolled to Number One Tervuren with multiple Best In Show wins. Over the next two years, we slowed the pace and took aim on 100 group placements. In 1997, at eight years, Junior won the National Specialty.

With his twelfth birthday on the horizon, Junior discovered agility. Then during the seven months I was dealing daily with my parents' health issues, Junior waited patiently. He qualified in Open at the 2002 Specialty, but when he returned to the ring in September he started having problems. We switched to the Preferred classes. Over the age of thirteen, Junior earned four titles in four weekends.

Junior produced only two litters but his kids and grand kids have earned thirteen Championships, twelve CDs, six CDXs, three UDs, three TDs, and, in agility, 20 Open, 13 Excellent and three MX titles.

A big Four Seasons fan, Junior provides sing along entertainment on trips. His favorite three songs are Rag Doll, Sherry, and Silence Is Golden.

BIS BISS Junior NA NAJ OAJ OJP did grow up. He is a wonderful companion, always eager to please, and with loving people manners that have earned him many friends.

Roxie is the beginning of a beautiful journey. She became our first show dog. She gave us our first litter and our first homebred Champion. She is the diva show dog when it's convenient for her and strongly feels that professional handlers only need apply. So, in spite of Mom and Dad, she's had some nice wins including a bunch of Best of Breeds and a group placement.

Her first love has always been human children. Since we have none, she was perfectly content with the neighborhood kids. She took great care to make sure each child had the chance to throw the ball for her. When she got tired, she'd simply pick up her ball and trot off to a nice cool spot to lie down.

Roxie, thank you for all you've given us. Thank you for taking care of us when we're sick. But most of all, thank you for introducing us to this wonderful world of Tervuren and all the friends we've made where ever we moved.

Mina is my first dog. I started with absolutely no clue. We began in a park district class and ended with a multitude of titles I didn't even know existed. Mina earned her OTCH and UDX in ten straight shows with numerous High in Trials and High Combined. She placed in Regional competitions and did well at the AKC Invitational. Extraordinarily consistent, she always did her job no matter what.

Still a young dog at this point we decided to try others things, resulting in her MX, MXJ, TD and HS. We have simply learned everything together.

While Mina is independent and self reliant, she is also very friendly and out going. She's pretty sure everyone has been standing around waiting for her to show up. She is comfortable and confident everywhere she goes. She's my girl; my little person in dog pajamas. She absolutely possesses my heart. To say that Mina has changed my life would be to fall short. I just don't know how I got so lucky.

I had picked a male puppy to keep out of Lacy's litter, but at eighteen months Lacy came back to me and proved she could do everything her brother did.

A Champion before her second birthday, Lacy continued to add tracking, obedience and agility titles (both AKC and NADAC), earning a VCD3 along the way.

Although she never had a litter of her own, Lacy has helped raise several puppies, and has been a wonderful babysitter.

But where Lacy excels is in her outstanding temperament. The happiest, most outgoing and sweetest dog I have ever known, Lacy has never met a dog or person she didn't like. Greeting all with a wagging tail and friendly eyes, she has been the best ambassador of our breed I have ever seen.

I chose Joie from a litter of eleven puppies or, more correctly, she chose me. A strong bond instantly developed between us and she has remained my devoted companion for the last thirteen years. Joie's devotion has provided comfort and cheer and shared in my triumphs.

Joie's eyes are not as clear and her movement is not as free as before, but she still retains the elegance and beauty that won her specialty class as a puppy. Joie's enthusiasm and pride also endure, and although I thought she should retire to be Queen of the sofa, she has recently convinced me that there are many activities that she's not too old for.

Thank you Linda and Rory Friedow for bringing Joie to my life and thank you Joie for so many years of love.

I met Andrea Meinhart following the ABTC buy-out of the volume breeder in Missouri. I had volunteered to foster but I adopted a puppy instead. It was a life-altering decision and now I am totally smitten with the breed.

Life was rough with Keeper at first. He had two speeds, MACH 1 and asleep—as well as some challenging behavioral issues. He's not an easy dog but training and maturity have helped.

Keeper is very action oriented and would always rather be doing something. He loves trying new things and approaches life with passion. He's a problem solver and enjoys challenge but he's also impulsive and unpredictable. Sometimes he doesn't care much for authority—he'd rather solve problems his own way. A master manipulator, he's so amusing that I struggle not to give in. He's often downright naughty and has the worst manners of any dog I've ever owned. I adore him.

True to his nature, his CD quest was highly amusing to spectators. A leg injury prevents advanced obedience and agility, but he's tracking certified and we hope to earn his TD this year.

I'm sweet Ruby Tuesday, one of the original mud puppies from Boulder, Colorado. Helen Hittesdorf was our angel sent by ABTC to rescue us in the spring of 1998. I then flew to Peoria, Illinois to join my new family, the Clarkes.

In the last 5 years I've completed my obedience training, started in agility, and enjoy swimming in the summer. I also earned my CGC Certificate and work in pet therapy. But most of all I love running in the park and playing with Dutch.

Dave and Alecia have been good parents but have learned the hard way. Grandma Cindy Simonsen tried to tell them that Tervuren puppies needed to be kenneled or they turn in to little tornados! One day when Dave came home from work he thought some one had broken into the house. Nope! It was just me ripping apart the bedroom. The mattress, spread, padding sheets—everything!

Fortunately, they continued to love me.

Oh, the picture is me on my Dad's Rescue Squad. He's a Captain on the Peoria Fire Department.

Kayla is one lucky girl! At the tender age of three weeks, she was one of the fortunate puppies removed from a volume breeder in Missouri by ABTC Rescue through the efforts of Andrea Meinhart and Cindy Simonsen. Although Kayla has had many demons to over come due to her early weaning, she has proven to be a wonderful companion to her owner, Emily Andsager, a fifteen-year old 4Her from Columbia, Missouri.

Kayla is Emily's 4H dog and has competed in local 4H competition for the past five years. Emily began training Kayla at the early age of nine weeks and Kayla has proven to be a very bright girl.

Kayla and Emily participate regularly in obedience and agility classes and it is Emily's dream to put a CD on Kayla and to participate in agility events.
