Luc's News
02/28/05: The final 2004 Herding rankings were published in the February/March 2005 issue of Tervuren News Tales, and we're pleased to announce that Luc was the Number 10 herding Belgian Tervuren in 2004, with 46 dogs defeated. Pretty impressive for only three trials!
11/20/04: At the Central Kentucky Herding Group Club's herding trial in Elizabethtown, Kentucky, Luc earned a qualifying score of 97½ to finish his HSAs title under judge Sherry Lee, DVM. He won the Started Class on Course A, Sheep, and went on to go High in Trial. Way to go, Wookie! Thanks again to handler and trainer Sherry Moss!
03/28/04: At the Central Kentucky Herding Group Club's herding trial in Elizabethtown, Kentucky, Luc earned a qualifying score of 82 and a fifth place finish in the Started Class on Course A, Sheep, under judge Judy Vanderford, for his second HSAs leg! Big thanks go to Luc's herding handler and trainer Sherry Moss!
03/27/04: At the Central Kentucky Herding Group Club's herding trial in Elizabethtown, Kentucky, Luc earned a qualifying score of 91½ and a second place finish in the Started Class on Course A, Sheep, under judge Mary Weir-Anderson, for his first HSAs leg!
07/31/03: For a bit of show practice and to set a good example for puppy Flinty, Luc went to show at the LaRue County Fair pet show and won Grand Champion, beating out about thirty other dogs and one very nice rooster. We won a nice rosette and a very large trophy, and most of all had a great time!
09/01/02: Luc won Best of Opposite Sex at the Louisville Kennel Club show in Lexington, Kentucky. Mrs. Judith Goodin was the judge, and Richard Mason Terry of Chien d'Coeur Belgians was nice enough to handle him for me again.
08/31/02: On the second day of the Bluegrass Classic Cluster (Lexington Kennel Club) in Lexington, Kentucky, Luc won Best of Opposite Sex under judge Mrs. Irma S. Fertl.
08/30/02: At the Northern Kentucky Kennel Club show in Lexington, Kentucky, Luc won Best of Opposite Sex under Richard F. Greathouse, MD.
Pure Courage
To the right is a photograph of the DOGNY sculpture entitled Pure Courage, for which artist Tracey E. Monahan chose a photograph of Luc as her inspiration for the Tervuren head study on the statue. In the book DOGNY: America's Tribute to Search and Rescue Dogs, Tracey writes:
The inspiration for the artwork was the purebred dogs that participated in the search and rescue efforts on September 11, 2001. Each AKC-recognized breed that worked at Ground Zero is represented by a head study on the sculpture on a field of blue and white stars, reminiscent of the U.S. flag.
Besides her obvious artistic skill, Tracey is also a breeder and exhibitor of English Springer Spaniels under the Capulet kennel name. She is also Vice President and Show Chair of the 100-year-old Ladies' Kennel Association of America.
Pure Courage was sponsored by Howard M. and Thea Lorber and was on display at 261 Madison Avenue in Manhattan.
I feel incredibly honored (and mildly embarrassed) to have Luc included in the DOGNY project, and wish to thank Terri Grodner, who helped connect Tracey with Luc's photo. Canine search and rescue teams are true heroes and I have the deepest respect and admiration for SAR teams such as Pat Grant and Topper (2002 Search and Rescue Dog of the Year) (http://www.belgians.com/allstar/topper.html) and Kim Gilmore and Mickey and Merak (http://bgmtnbelgians.aboutmontana.org/). About Luc
How to summarize Jean-Luc in a few words? Well, I can tell you he's a sweetheart, has full dentition, a scissors bite, moves beautifully and carries his tail correctly. I can tell you his shoulder is lovely, his mask is correct, he has natural balance when herding, he has a lot of drive, and he's biddable and confident. But all that seems pale in comparison to what Luc is all about.
Luc is the dog I gave to my husband as a wedding gift; his first dog ever. All Derek asked for was a puppy that was bright like a new penny. With the help of some very special friends, what he, what we, got was so very much more. Derek and Luc learned about the conformation ring together, earning Luc's Championship with 3 majors and a BOB over specials. And through it all, Luc has been by Derek's side, the loyal boy, just waiting to see what fun happens next. And what did I get in the bargain? The chance to put that silly poodle away and herd with a real dog!
I guess what I'd really like to say about Luc, to have preserved for posterity, is the same thing Luc is most fond of hearing himself. He is truly a “Good Boy.”
